We've been studying a family of sulphurs. We have seen several this year, but have not been able to photograph one.
So we sketched the pupa, larva, and butterfly in our notebooks and made notes.
I let the girls pick which they would prefer and they both chose the cloudless sulphur.
Here are my notes on the clouded sulfur/orange sulfur...
- enjoys open sunny areas like roadsides, meadows, alfalfa fields, parks, pastures, and home gardens
- the eggs are white and laid singly on alfalfa, red clover, white clover, and sweet white clover
- their flights are quick and erratic
- they winter in the chrysalis
- their fall appearance can be lighter and sometimes larger than spring and summer
- they emerge from April to November
