Great Outdoors with the Handbook of Nature Study

June's book share with Poppins Book Nook is the Great Outdoors. We chose to share a favorite around here...Handbook of Nature Study by Anna Botsford Comstock.

The Handbook of Nature Study is written as a guide to the teacher or parent. It provides information on any number of nature topics and questions for study. It encourages families to get close up and personal with nature. Part one gives great ideas for getting outside with your kids and observing. Then it is divided into Animals, Plants, and Earth and Sky.

There is so much to study and choose from we've rarely found a study that wasn't there. Once we were inspired to make up our own study based on the format that Comstock provides for studying the Praying Mantis.

Here are some of the most recent studies we've been inspired by from our Handbook of Nature Study...

 

Golden Rod, Oak Tree, Queen Anne's Lace, Weather, A Hawk, an Owl, and the Bald Eagle, Cat Tail, Spiders and webs, Buckeye Butterfly, Robin to name a few....or check out all of our nature studies (lots of animals, insects, and plants throughout the years). 

We also love the blog Handbook of Nature Study. Barb provides lots of great lessons to get you started. She sends out a monthly newsletter and provides lots of feedback and interaction with challenges. And recently she's updated the look of her blog. It is lovely.
