There are lots of Easter preparations at our house. Starting with the food...We dye Easter eggs using natural dyes. This year we used turmeric, blueberries, and raspberries. The green didn't work, so we had to use store dye for those. Easter evening, we have something egg to eat. Sometimes stuffed eggs, sometimes egg salad, sometimes just plan hard boiled eggs.
I like to make carrot cake and pecan pie for Easter dinner. I had some extra colored icing, so the kids had a spoonful of icing carrot.
For several years, we've been getting the kids gifts at Christmas and Easter using the rule of 3's. They simply get 3 gifts from us at each holiday. (A new Easter dress or suit is an added bonus for them too because my kids love to dress up.)
So Easter consists of a special gift, a wrist corsage or boutonniere, and a yummy treat (this year...chocolate crosses that I made). We don't make up baskets or do an Easter egg hunt at our house. (Although our family and friends that we spend Easter with do those things for them).
This year for Easter I made the wrist corsages and boutonnieres from silk flowers. Usually we pick up orchid corsages and rose boutonnieres, but this year we weren't going to be in town during the weekend. I really like how they turned out. I might make them every year now. A little floral tape and ribbon really does the trick.
For Li
For Ceesa
For Wheel
For Jo-Jo
So the special gift this year was a kit. I made different kits for each of them. (Directions coming soon!)
Jo-Jo got an Ornithology kit
Ceesa got a Botany kit
Li got an Entomology kit
Since he was a bit small for a kit, I used a valise to put baby type gifts inside for Wheel. He loves his bunny. It ends up having a very wet head!
(We did black and white dresses and suits this year.)
Then off to church for Easter breakfast and Sunday School and church services. A change of clothes and a short drive took us to our dear friends for a dinner celebration.

hunting for the elusive egg
The dog wanted to help.
With 2 sisters to help look,
Li decided to go play football instead.
A hike in the woods, then it was back home to crack open those kits and eat up those colored eggs.

Happy Easter! I have always wanted to dye eggs using natural dyes, but I am always so busy during this time of year, that I just find it too easy to use store-bought food colors. I LOVE the kits. Yes, please tell us more about them. (You wouldn't be willing to make them and sell them would you?)
Yes. The store bought dyes are much less time consuming and I find I can't always get the color I'm after. There's a lot of trial and error.
The kids love the kits. They play with them almost every day. I was really pleased with how they turned out.
If you would like me to make some for your family, send me an e-mail and I can figure out how much they would cost to put together and send them to you. :)
Your eggs turned out nice and bright doing them the natural way. I want to try that for next year. The kits that you made the kit look like fun. Sounds like you had a very nice Easter.
They use their kits everyday. It turned out even better than I had hoped. It really was a great Easter.
