Homemade Birthdays: Food and Cake

We have a lot of fun with birthday parties around here.

We spend time together planning them and try to be as creative as we can making and using what we have on hand to put them together. We often try to come up with themed foods and cakes that we can make together.

We have standbys that are always a big hit: speciality made hamburgers, hot dog bars, soup and salad with bread, tacoes, fruit salad, and pizza.

Sometimes I make food specifically for the parties. For an explorer party, I sliced hot dogs into worms.  For a movie party, we had movie candies, popcorn, and pop. For a circus party, we borrowed a pop corn popper and had hot dogs. We had finger sandwiches and teas for a tea party. We had a dress-up party with dress-up your own pizza and ice cream bar (make your own).

For a detective party, we made sushi looking rice crispy treats

For a music party, we made music notes
from pretzels and marshmellows

 Often times, I will take a normal food and give it a themed name.

Most of our cakes are themed, but sometimes I'll have a special request for a certain kind of cake. Jo-Jo requested a fat kid's cake or her fourth birthday and Ceesa wanted an ice cream cake for her tenth birthday. One year, I made a batch of cupcakes for a circus party. I frosted them in different colors and put brightly colored ribbons under them to look like balloons.

I find that cupcakes work best for parties away from home-no cutting and no utensils.

Ice Cream Cake
1/2 container of chocolate ice cream, softened
1/2 container of vanilla ice cream, softened
1 package oreos
1 container whippped cream
2 containers chocolate icing

Crush the oreos and put in the bottom of the pan.
Top with vanilla ice cream.
Spread on chocolate frosting.
Top with chocolate ice cream.
Spread on chocolate frosting.
Top with whippped cream.
Freeze until solid.

Fat Kids Cake
1 package chocolate cake mix
1/2 c. chocolate chips
1 can frosting

Bake cake according to recipe for 2 rounds.
Melt frosting and chocolate chips together.
Pour over both layers of cake.
