Studies show that children that have a high vocabulary are better readers.
So how do children acquire a large vocabulary?
The key is books…here are some tips.
- Read to your children.
- Give children time to read independently. Just read-no activities, not for a school task-just read.
- Use words they know to help them with those they do not.
- Be contextual more than definitional. Focus on words that children want to know from what they’ve read. Then practice using them in your speaking and in writing.
- Make word learning fun and interesting. Help children become fascinated with words. Play games. Who can think of the most words for cold? Describe a painting. Play scrabble.
It is important that children find pleasure in words and in doing so gain joy in reading.
Wishing you homeschool blessings,
