Storytelling: How to Begin

My kids love a good story. They love to read, be read to, or for someone to simply tell them a story of their own invention. Off and on now for years, I've made up stories to tell them. Stories that are...well...not particularly exciting or intriguing, but they love them none the less.

So here are some suggestions that I've found helpful when telling stories:

Tailor your stories to your children. Young children really like stories that retell daily events. Kids 5-8 years old like stories of courage and comfort. Kids 9-12 years old like stories of high adventure and suspense.

Tell stories of the day they were born, a funny thing they did, a special holiday, or a family vacation.

Tell stories from your family: when you were a child, about beloved grandparents or relatives, and even about those they never meet.

Tell stories about objects you have around the house. Where did it come from? How did you get it?

It really doesn't matter much what the story is about, it is more about the telling.
