SchoolhouseTeachers.com Website {A Review}

SchoolhouseTeachers.com is an online source for curriculum from www.TheHomeschoolMagazine.com (The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, owner).

SchoolhouseTeachers.com brings great minds together to give you a balance of subjects-history, literature, geography, math, foreign language, science, writing, guitar, spelling, economics, filmmaking, worldviews, reading lessons, and more-there's even a recipe index. The site is broken into grade band sections for pre-k/elementary, middle school, and high school and other sections that include: teachers, family, dailies, library, and extras.

This type of online curriculum is especially helpful for those of you that have access to a printer and internet access. Not everything requires printing, but if you need documentation to submit end-of-year portfolios or narratives, you can print work off. There are new activities, worksheets, and other curriculum components updated monthly and for some subjects, there are dailies.

What works for us...Our family is totally hands-on, so we particularly like Jason Lindsey's science experiments and guides. The experiments are creative and fun for my kids and the guides are descriptive. Each guide lays out clearly what materials are necessary, how to complete the experiment, and what the science involves.

We tried out the egg drop experiment...

Notice how the roll was a tad off center?

Umm...{blush}

We also really like the geography lessons by Terri Johnson from Knowledge Quest. The maps are detailed and clear and the activities have real world application.

The dailies section has some things we enjoy as well. The Simply Shakespeare section by RachelAnn Rogish is a favorite of ours with devotions, background, geography, activities, and recipes. We do love Shakespeare.  Professor Light offers some interesting material in Everyday Astronomy. There is background information about something astronomy and activities (book suggestions, movies, recipes, word searches, and math problems to name a few).

The easiest way to get started is to dig in and look through the different topics. Look at all of the sections and browse through this month's curriculum and then through the previous month's links. There are samples available that you can check out, too!

Maybe the best part of this curriculum is that you can pick and choose what you use, how much you use, and how you use it.

We opt for real materials whenever possible. That means we use very few worksheets and spend lots of time reading, doing, and getting our hands dirty. The way the site is set-up, we can choose materials that line up with our way of learning.

Wishing you homeschool blessings,
Bethany
